Nordea in Shanghai: A one-stop shop for Nordic companies in China
The desk interprets Nordea's expansion efforts in Shanghai as a strategic move to strengthen the financial infrastructure supporting Nordic companies entering the Chinese market. With the integration into China's payment network and comprehensive banking services, Nordea is positioning itself as a pivotal intermediary in local financing, crucial for Nordic businesses facing funding challenges. Per the full note from Nordea, this capability allows for enhanced cash management and trade finance solutions. Given the growing presence of Nordic firms in China, this development may create a favorable environment for FX stability and growth in related currency pairs.
What the desk is arguing
The desk frames Nordea's recent developments in Shanghai as a significant advantage for Nordic businesses looking to penetrate the Chinese market effectively. By securing connections to China's payment infrastructure and offering a range of banking services, they enhance financial access for companies traditionally daunted by local lending barriers. Per the full note , the branch's General Manager Angela Tu emphasizes the importance of providing localized financial support.
A notable revelation in the Nordea report is the branch's ability to facilitate incoming and outgoing payments in all currencies, which can streamline operations for Nordic firms. The connection to the CNAPS payment system signifies a critical endpoint for cash management, which should support client needs in a volatile market, particularly as businesses navigate the complexities of regulations and financial landscapes.

Market implications
Watch for currency movements in trade partnerships between Nordic countries and China, particularly in sectors where Nordea is facilitating financing. Should Nordic companies increase operations or investment levels, this could lead to broader implications in EUR/CNY or other related currency pairs.
Risks to this view
The primary risk to this outlook would be a downturn in economic relations between China and Nordic countries, or substantial regulatory changes that challenge foreign investment. Additionally, a lack of demand for financing in uncertain economic climates could undermine Nordea's value proposition.
Markets and investment Nordea in Shanghai: A one-stop shop for Nordic companies in China 10-08-2023 “Newcomers and other customers often find it very helpful to learn and understand the local market from a Chinese angle. We provide that local perspective and can help explain the relevant local policies and regulations,” says the branch’s general manager, Angela Tu. Angela Tu, Nordea Shanghai branch’s general manager.
When it comes to doing business in China, securing access to local funding can be a major challenge, particularly for small and mid-sized companies. A Nordic-based company may need to build a factory or buy new machinery for its operations in China. Yet local Chinese banks are seldom willing to lend money to a foreign company they do not know.
That’s where Nordea’s Shanghai branch can help fill the gap. “Because we know these companies, or their Nordic parent company, we can help give them the financial support they cannot get from the local market,” says the branch’s general manager, Angela Tu. The branch recently hit a major milestone, connecting to China’s payment infrastructure (CNAPS) as well as implementing Netbank International, the electronic banking service offered to customers. The new infrastructure means that the branch can now offer end-to-end banking services to customers in China, covering not only financing but also daily banking needs, such as incoming and outgoing payments in all currencies. “With the connection to CNAPS and the integration to NBI, we can now support our customers with a full-suite product offering and expanded cash management capabilities.” Angela says.

That could be when obtaining a fixed asset loan for building a new plant or buying new machinery or setting up a credit facility to cover working capital needs. “We’re also doing more and more trade finance for companies,” Angela says. “It’s a good mix. Many customers also choose to do FX and place deposits with us rather than with Chinese banks. At Nordea, they get a dedicated client executive and customer service team to help them on a daily basis.” The Shanghai branch team.
