Nordea Investor Speed Dating: We want to help you find the right match
The recent commentary from Nordea highlights the effectiveness of their Investor Speed Dating events in bridging startups with venture capital, suggesting a potentially conducive environment for innovation-driven equity financing in the Nordic region. This platform enhances the matchmaking process between investors and startups, resulting in a more efficient allocation of capital, as noted by Teija Nousiainen, who emphasized the importance of pre-matching interests prior to meetings. Per the full note source, Nordea's proactive approach positions them as a key facilitator in the emerging growth space. Traders should consider how this strategy may signal an uptrend in IPO activity and risk appetite within the Nordic markets, thus impacting regional FX pairs and broader market sentiment.
What the desk is arguing
The desk believes that Nordea's efforts in facilitating connections between startups and venture capitalists indicate robust economic conditions for innovation. By actively curating investor engagements, Nordea is likely to stimulate increased investments in Nordic startups, which could enrich the region's economic landscape.
Furthermore, the emphasis on effective pre-matching processes could lead to higher success rates of funding rounds, which historically correlates with premium valuation multiples in equity markets. This indicates a ripe moment for investors to reassess their exposure to equity-linked FX positions.
Where it sits in our coverage
Our internal coverage suggests a consensus target of 1.075 for the EUR/SEK, with a range between 1.04 and 1.12. Specifically, jpmorgan sets a target at 1.10, while bofa presents a more conservative outlook at 1.04.
This view aligns with the prevailing opinion where liquidity from increased venture funding could provide some upward pressure on the SEK, but it fundamentally diverges from the lower target set by bofa, suggesting caution in the face of global economic uncertainties.
How other firms see it
Firms like jpmorgan are aligned with Nordea's optimistic view about the prospects for Nordic startups, underscoring an anticipated increase in investment activity. Conversely, bofa adopts a more cautious stance, fearing the impacts of potential macroeconomic headwinds.
As the situation unfolds, traders should keep an eye on how the startup funding trends in the Nordics impact other related currency pairs, especially EUR/USD, which often reflects broader eurozone economic sentiment as well.

Entrepreneurship Nordea Investor Speed Dating: We want to help you find the right match 03-07-2023 For most companies attending, Nordea Investor Speed Dating events are a fast track to one or more meetings with a global venture capital fund. Deal Flow Manager Teija Nousiainen handles all aspects of the match-making process, from applications to investor relations, so we caught up with her to find out how it all began and how startups and scaleups can benefit. Nordea has been arranging Investor Speed Dating events for three years now.
Where did the idea come from and what is Nordea's role? “The idea actually came from a single person, the Head of Startup & Growth Finland, Vesa Riihimäki, back in 2020. Seeing as we had thousands of startup and growth companies as customers and a wide network of investors around the world, he wondered ‘why not try to help match the two?’ We’ve been organising investor speed dating events ever since. Our role in the speed dating is to curate the deal flow, i.e. match the ideas of the startup with type of investors and funding.
The aim is to pre-match the interests of companies and investors beforehand to make sure that the one-to-one meetings in the event are as effective as possible. This pre-matching is actually where we get the best feedback. We want to make sure no one is wasting their time and the meetings can eventually lead to an investment.” How does Nordea Investor Speed Dating work? “Companies apply through our website to attend one of our closed speed dating events.
As Nordea Startup & Growth is a house bank for thousands of startups and scaleups across the Nordics, we also check the fundraising plans of our customers and see if any could benefit from attending. Our Startup & Growth teams in each of the Nordic countries select which companies take part. Before each event, we share the data on the chosen companies with investors, who then get to choose which companies they would like to have a one-to-one meeting with on the day.” The aim is to pre-match the interests of companies and investors beforehand to make sure that the one-to-one meetings in the event are as effective as possible.
Nordea Startup & Growth has a broad network of investors; we’re currently working closely with over 300 venture funds/growth funds globally. Who can apply and when is the best time to do it? “We have events for different growth stages: pre-seed events, seed-stage events and events for scaleups (A round and beyond). For seed-stage events, the companies typically have an annual turnover of around EUR 500k, while for scaleup events company turnovers usually run into the millions of euros.
All our events are open to companies from different industries and categories across the Nordic countries. Companies should be operating in the tech space but hardware plus software combinations could be applicable as well. The optimal time to apply is of course when you’re starting your fundraising.
